About

Welcome to the Commonwealth Pipes & Drums, a musical organization formed by Irish immigrants to Boston in 1921. Originally known as, Kevin Barry Pipes and Drums, our band is now based out of Melrose, a suburb of Boston. We’re proud of both our Irish and Scottish roots, as well as our home state, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts which inspired our new name.

Our members hail from several New England states: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. Over the years, we have showcased our talents at Highland Games competitions, both locally and as far afield as Chicago and Canada with plans to compete in Scotland and Ireland.

In addition to competing, we play an active role in our community, participating in parades, hosting our own St. Patrick’s Day performances, and leading UMass Lowell graduates in their annual procession. Our history is a testament to our dedication to preserving Celtic traditions and sharing them with a wider audience.

Performances

The Commonwealth Pipes & Drums focuses on giving our best performance regardless of whether we’re performing at a local parade, a University graduation or a highland games competition.

Competition

The band competes at Highland games competitions including New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts, Chicago, and Ontario Canada. We compete right in the middle of the 1 through 5 grading system in grade 3.

Parade

We perform at 3 to 4 parades per year and only the most enjoyable ones! Melrose Memorial Day, Hingham Independence Day, and Woburn Halloween. Contact us below if you’d like to hire us for yours.

Private

A full band, a quartet, or individuals are available for hire for various events like graduations, weddings, funerals, and anything else where pipers or drummers might enhance your event. Reach out for details.
